Awesome dads send stuff to space for their kids

With the Space Shuttles flying into storage aboard their 272 piggybacks, it’s surprising to see a new dawn in space exploration, and not from that Brittish virgin with stunningly awesome hair.

We sent my son’s favorite train “Stanley” to space in a weather balloon with a HD camera and an old cell phone for GPS. He was recovered 27 miles away in a corn field and we got some great footage of the trip. This video documents the journey from liftoff to landing. [RonIsNeat on YouTube]

Stanley’s adventure hopefully is part of a new DIY Space Race with home made, heck, let’s say Bespoke Spacecraft! Check out this iPhone space flight from 2010.

    Mike,

This has to be one of the most awesome things I have watched in awhile for what a dad does for his son! I would love to do something like that! Sending a favorite toy into space and then GPS tracking it and to video it! I wonder if i can send my son’s favorite toy to the bottom of the ocean with a camera? Oh wait, I live in the middle of the country so I would have to settle for the bottom of a lake….I might have to look into this! thanks for posting it. It is a inspiring thing he did for his son!

Aaron, Bottom of a lake would be rad, but really hard because of the water pressure. Youd have to make your own bell diver! Imagine the DadCred…
