Why do AC motors have brushes?
The field induces a current flow into the shorted armature whose magnetic field opposes that of the field coils. Speed can be controlled by rotating the brushes with respect to the field axis. This motor has superior commutation below synchronous speed, inferior commutation above synchronous speed.
What happens when motor brushes wear out?
Many universal motor malfunctions are caused by wearing down of the carbon brushes, the soft blocks of carbon that complete the electrical contact to the motor’s commutator. When these brushes become worn, the motor will spark, and electrical contact may be incomplete.
How do brushes work?
Each conducting segment is wired to a winding of the armature. The function of the brushes is to conduct electricity to the individual segments as they rotate from brush to brush. This allows the motor to turn in one direction at a speed determined by the number of windings in the armature.
How are motor brushes measured?
Brush sizes are designated as: Thickness x Width x Length of the carbon. If the brush design includes a Red Top, the length measurement should include the pad. On brushes with bevels, the length is measured on the long side. Brushes with a head on top include length of head.
How long do motor brushes last?
What is normal brush life. As an estimate, 7,500 hours brush life is normal for general purpose, medium horsepower DC motors with good commutator film with commutator surface speeds in the range of 2,500 to 4,000 feet per minute. The minimum life might be 2,000 to 5,000 hours with 10,000 hours being about maximum.
